Recently featured front page in The Independent and subject of various forth coming documentaries, ethical record label Rafiki Records is based in Rwanda, East Africa. The label came about as a result of the creation of the Solace Studio, equipped and run by the Rafiki’s founder, Dicken Marshall, a producer and composer from Brighton. The studio was developed as an income generating scheme for the charity Solace Ministries.
Rafiki’s focus is on giving fair opportunity to Rwandan artists through 50/50 contracts, protecting artists against exploitation, setting a benchmark for artist and industry in East Africa and supporting community projects which help alleviate poverty ...and in doing so to help to nurture a Rwandan musical identity which, as a result of the country’s troubled history has suffered from repression.
Rafiki’s artists are equipped to compose and produce bespoke recordings to brief ...as with any London based media composer. Their range of styles pans from traditional Rwandan music to Hip-Hop and various forms of Reggae and their roster includes artists such as The Solace Gospel Choir, which consists of orphans of the genocide in Rwanda.
