Jon Lee and Murray Wyatt, aka flexpicnic, are two lifelong friends who have been recording music together since their school days. More recently, flexpicnic have written bespoke pieces for companies such as Jaguar, Virgin Atlantic and Vauxhall. They have received prime time syncs across the BBC network, worldwide broadcasts during the ICC Cricket World Cup and numerous bits and pieces across a wide array of BBC radio platforms. They also scored the short film, Smart TV, for Surface Films.
Jon studied Music Technology at the London College of Music. It was here where he honed his studio skills, mastering the art of recording by working with a variety of musicians from world class classical pianists to brass ensembles right through to rappers and punk rockers.
Whilst working as a studio technician no piece of audio gear was left untouched; analog tape, big modular synths from the 70s, enormous digital and analog consoles and all the outboard gear he could shake the proverbial stick at. He graduated with 1st class (Hons) and received a scholarship to study Audio Technology at post-graduate level. During this time he worked programming bespoke software that enabled users to control music using gesture whilst also furthering his ability to record and mix original music for stereo and multi-channel formats.
Murray attended Coventry University to study Music Composition and professional practice. Whilst in Coventry he joined ’The Tone Thieves’ a four piece fusion band which toured the UK and supported bands and artist’s such as Bastille, The Ordinary Boys, Tom Odell, Polar Bear and Nizlopi. After finishing university in 2009 with a BA (Hons) Murray found plenty of session work with the likes of up and coming artists Cat Chinn and Chris Ridegway and he has worked extensively with renown producer John Rivers.
After their studies, Jon and Murray reconvened to work on an original piece for a promo for Lotus and found that their new skills complemented one another perfectly. This chemistry inspired them to consolidate their talents and create flexpicnic.
Since their inception, flexpicnic have been creating original music across a broad range of genres for commercial purposes. They have written for adverts, libraries and films.
Aside from composing Jon and Murray play as part of popular south coast folk act ’Quinns Quinney’ and also the Gypsy Jazz ensemble ’Wiff Waff’ who are currently recording their first studio album due for release later this year.
